Why Sound Start?
Grounded in the science of reading and a speech-to-print approach, Sound Start provides explicit, sequential instruction while giving teachers the ready-to-use materials they need to teach with confidence.
- Sound Start goes beyond phonics instruction alone. Grade-specific lessons integrate the essential components of early literacy instruction, including: phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding and encoding, morphology, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, sentence-level writing, and syntax.
- Instruction is carefully sequenced across grades K–3, helping schools build a coherent approach to foundational literacy instruction from one grade level to the next.
- Teachers receive explicit, sequential lessons delivered through interactive Google Slides, along with Teacher’s Manuals, student activity pages, assessments, games, and additional printable resources. The program provides the structure teachers need while maintaining the flexibility necessary to respond to the students in front of them.
- Every Sound Start license includes one full year of asynchronous online training, allowing teachers to learn the instructional approach, understand the rationale behind key practices, and revisit training as needed throughout the school year. Because training and instructional materials are integrated into the program, schools can support more consistent implementation across classrooms without requiring teachers to attend extensive outside training before getting started.
- Sound Start Literacy has been piloted as a Tier 1 foundational literacy program in kindergarten through third grade classrooms. Following two years of Sound Start instruction, 90% of students in the pilot cohort finished first grade at or above benchmark on DIBELS 8, with 76% performing above benchmark. Sound Start is also engaged in independent research to further evaluate program outcomes and build its evidence base.
- Individual Teacher License: $389 per grade-level program. Each initial license includes the complete program, downloadable materials, online training, and one full year of digital access.
- Optional Digital Access Renewal: $49 per teacher/year Renewal provides continued access to the interactive Google Slides and online training. Renewal is optional; downloaded materials remain yours to keep.
